Internship Opportunities

We currently have seven different internship opportunities that will allow you to gain experience and have fun working in the environmental space. These internships can fit many different types of interests, but are ideal for those who want to become more familiar with nonprofits and grassroots organizations, gain experience in the environmental realm, and become involved in the San Luis Obispo County.

All internships are unpaid and last for two quarters (approximately 6 months).

 Fundraising and Development Intern | This internship will provide you with real world, hands on donor and fund development experience in a non-profit setting. We will teach skills that are necessary in research projects, prospects, and initiatives for donor development. The person in this position will:

  • Assist in general donor stewardship
  • Communicate with current and prospective donors
  • Help maintain and update donor databases
  • Assist Development staff in drafting fundraising emails
  • Assist Development staff in event planning and coordination
  • Research projects, prospects, and initiatives for donor development

This is an excellent opportunity to gain a diverse range of experience in the many different ways that nonprofits acquire the resources they need to fulfill their missions.  6-month internship available at the start of each quarter. 

Beach Keeper Intern  | This internship will help plan Coastal Cleanup Day for San Luis Obispo County in September and the monthly occurring “Beach Keeper” beach cleanups. This internship will provide you with real world, hands on event planning experience in a non-profit setting. We will teach skills that are necessary in business development and the event planning industry. The person in this position will:

  • Develop business sponsorship
  • Organize advertising and media efforts
  • Recruit volunteers
  • Assist in coordinating the 30 cleanup sites of SLO County for Coastal Cleanup Day *OR* cleanup sites for the monthly “Beach Keepers” program
  • Assist with all other event preparation; from inception, to day-of execution, to post event wrap-up
  • Manage volunteers, sponsors, trash collecting logistics, and run the event on-site

This is an ideal position for someone who is outgoing, desires event-planning experience, enjoys and wants to protect our coast and waterways, and someone who is detail-oriented.  6-month internship available at the start of each quarter

 Community Engagement Amplifier | ECOSLO is currently seeking an intern for engaging the community in participating in volunteer opportunities. This role is a contact between our ECOSLO volunteers who lead hikes in the City of San Luis Obispo.  The person in this internship will:

  • Co-plan & facilitate monthly volunteer opportunities
  • Support volunteer coordination including event planning and volunteer engagement and recruitment.
  • Be a contact between our ECOSLO volunteers who lead hikes in the City of San Luis Obispo
  • General volunteer recruitment
  • Event and meeting planning and execution
  • Posting to media outlets, and managing information on our website and social media platforms
  • Assisting with projects and requests, as needed

This is an ideal position for someone who is outgoing, has strong interpersonal skills, is highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects at once, and is self-motivated and detail oriented. Additionally, this would be a good fit for someone who wants to become familiar with working with volunteers, expanding community engagement, and help grow the volunteer program for a non-profit organization.  6-month internship available at the start of each quarter. 

 Vigilant Earth Advocate | This intern will assist ECOSLO’s advocacy efforts in local environmental protection and community awareness. This internship will provide you with real world, hands on environmental advocacy in a non-profit setting. We will teach skills that are necessary for understanding environmental activism and educating the local community. The person in this  role will:

  • Attend at least one local government council meeting during duration of internship
  • Assist the ECOSLO Advocacy team in researching current and prospective advocacy topics
  • Write articles for general education and for ECOSLO’s stance on topics,
  • Post information, articles, resources, etc. to media outlets.

This is an ideal position for someone with a communications and/or environmental  protection focus and wants to become familiar with the advocacy side of a non-profit organization, gain experience in environmental work, and become involved working within the San Luis Obispo County community. 6-month internship available at the start of each quarter. 

 Social Media Strategist | This intern will develop and implement social media strategies for ECOSLO. This internship will provide you with real world, hands on online marketing experience in a non-profit setting. We will teach skills that are necessary for the day-to-day execution of social media messaging and community maintenance. Help the local, environmental center of SLO (a.k.a ECOSLO) get the word out about advocacy efforts, educational docent-hikes, beach-cleanups, and more!  The person in this role will:

  • Assist with the day-to-day execution of social media messaging and community maintenance
  • Develop creative and engaging social media content
  • Assist with executing hashtag campaigns
  • Assist with analysis and reporting on social media account performance
  • Develop outreach strategies to encourage community engagement
  • Assist with email campaigns.
  • Generate a posting schedule and content to be shared on ECOSLO’s website, social media pages, and beyond

If you’re looking for social media and website experience, look no further than ECOSLO’s Social Media Strategist position! 6-month internship available at the start of each quarter. 

 Eco-Event Orchestrator | Is planning environmentally-friendly events your style? Well look no further, ECOSLO is currently seeking an Eco-Event Intern! This intern will assist with planning ECOSLO’s community events throughout the year. This internship will provide you with real world, hands on event planning experience in a non-profit setting. We will teach skills that are necessary in business development and the event planning industry. The person in this role will:

  • Co-plan & facilitate events including Eco-Networking, SLO Green Drinks, and multiple fundraising events throughout the term
  • Assist with all other event preparation; from inception, to day-of execution, to post event wrap-up
  • Gain experience in event planning logistics, eco-friendly/zero-waste practices, marketing, sponsor relations, and day-of logistics

This is a great opportunity for event planning and/or fundraising experience by learning how to plan a successful event from concept through execution6-month internship available at the start of each quarter. 

 Storytelling Wizard | Do you like capturing moments and telling stories? Then this is the perfect internship for you! This internship will provide you with real world, hands on digital media experience in a non-profit setting. You will gain skills that are necessary for interviewing and recording volunteer stories, and documenting events. These pieces will be used on media outlets, both online and in print. The person in this role will:

  • Conduct interviews with ECOSLO volunteers, donors, staff, etc.
  • Attend ECOSLO events and take pictures, videos, ask questions, etc.
  • Develop and share stories on ECOSLO’s volunteer blog
  • Measure success of volunteer blog

This is an ideal position for someone who wants to further their  and/or writing skills, and has a passion for getting to know individuals and telling their story. Ownership of or access to a camera is required for this internship. 6-month internship available at the start of each quarter.
